about

Brady//Donkin//Phipps is the debut release from Sydney-based guitarist Michael J Brady.

Having long performed in the trio setting, Brady//Donkin//Phipps was the group from which Brady’s bandleading practice began. Featuring bassist Benjamin Phipps and drummer Cy Donkin, the group shared an interest in exploring how melody can be held in the space between a guitar, a double bass, and a drum set.

With many of the melodies originating as vocal tunes, the record features moments of atmosphere and reverberance set against energetic rock-builds. These contrasts help outline the corners of the ensemble space, creating room for Brady’s lyricism to sit comfortably at home.

The record features six original compositions from Brady and Phipps, as well as three improvisations from the trio. Tracks six and seven feature longtime mentor to the group Tenor Saxophonist Sandy Evans, with trumpeter Deven Rahman also joining on the latter.

With the many complications of life post-2020, each member moved on to newer projects and Brady//Donkin//Phipps went on to become the Michael J Brady Trio. This record is a snapshot into a deeply important time in Brady's practice, and an homage to the shared musicianship and friendship the trio grew together.
